Iris ‘Red Heart’ is a distinguished Standard Dwarf Bearded (SDB) iris cultivar introduced by hybridizer Alta Brown in 1966. This compact iris reaches a height of approximately 13 inches (33 cm) and is celebrated for its vibrant and contrasting coloration. The standards (upper petals) display a lavender-blue hue, while the falls (lower petals) are a striking oxblood red, bordered by a 1/4-inch margin of lavender-blue. A pale lavender beard adds to the flower’s intricate palette. ‘Red Heart’ blooms early in the season, offering a vivid display that enlivens garden spaces. Its parentage includes a cross between (‘Snow Flurry’ x ‘Sea O’Blue’ pumila) and ‘Lilli-Var’, contributing to its unique coloration and form. The American Iris Society recognized ‘Red Heart’ with several awards, including an Honorable Mention in 1968, a Judges’ Commendation in 1969, and an Award of Merit in 1971. Gardeners value this cultivar for its showy flowers and reliable performance, making it a cherished addition to rock gardens, borders, and container plantings.
