Leasing Contracts
Q. I am having a hard time finding a form to lease a horse. It is a full lease (board and feed, not vet and smithing). These forms are nowhere to be found. Could you please help me?
A. First, please know that you must have any lease contract reviewed by a local lawyer before signing it. Although I can direct you to a source for a sample lease contract, state laws vary widely, and you must be sure your contract is written within the constraints of your state’s contract statutes.
That said, I suggest you get your hands on a copy of the book, Legal Forms, Contracts, and Advice for Horse Owners by Sue Ellen Marder and J. B. Oakes. This book has sample copies of contracts covering many aspects of equine enterprise. It will give you a good starting point for drafting your lease contract. You can read more about this book on my Horseman’s Bookstore page.
